Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnosis?

The term hypnosis comes from the Greek word 'hypnos' meaning sleep. Hypnotherapy involves a patient experiencing deep relaxation which creates an enhanced state of awareness with their attention focused on creating a positive change. It can be used for a variety of issues including stopping smoking, insomnia, addiction and improving self esteem.

Will you make me do something that I am not comfortable with?

No. You cannot be made to do anything against your will while under hypnosis. Hypnosis is about empowerment rather than loss of control.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Everybody's experience of hypnosis will be slightly different but generally, people say that they just felt very relaxed. Some people report their limbs and eyelids feeling quite heavy while others feel light and 'floaty.' You will be aware of your surroundings eg background noises at all times.

Is there anyone who should not use hypnosis?

Yes. Please consult with your doctor before using hypnosis if you suffer from psychosis, schizophrenia or any personality disorder.

Can everyone be hypnotised?

Although everyone is capable of entering a hypnotic trance and in fact does so on a daily basis (eg when they are engrossed in a good book or drive somewhere on 'autopilot') hypnotherapy is a collaborative process between the therapist and patient. The patient has to want to engage and make changes. If the patient is not engaged for any reason (eg is only being hypnotised to appease a family member or is extremely sceptical about hypnosis) then they are unlikely to allow themselves to go into hypnosis and is therefore unlikely to see any lasting change.
However if you are serious about making a positive change in your life, then success rates are excellent (over 90% in studies)

What will happen during my session?

Each session is tailored to the individual person. A first appointment will involve a full consultation where I will ask some questions about the problem and its history, along with any relevant medical history. I will then guide you through some relaxation exercises to take you into trance. Next, I will work with you to solve your problems and address any changes that need to be made. You will then be brought out of trance. You will be fully awake throughout the session but you will feel very relaxed. Afterwards, you will be fine to continue with your day as normal.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person. I often see results after just one session but clients sometimes need 2-3 sessions to get the full effect. Traditional hypnotherapists often need upwards of 6 sessions to have an effect but by using newer, more powerful techniques, we get results much faster.

Does hypnotherapy work over Zoom?

Hypnotherapy works just as well online as it does face to face. Clients often report that they prefer using zoom as it saves on travel time, parking and petrol costs.

I have found that clients on Zoom are more relaxed as they are in their own surroundings. They therefore tend to go into a deeper trance. It also allows me to work with clients from all over the world.
